Everyone in Los Angeles in August should definitely try to check this out…from August 21-25, Steely Dan, arguably one of the greatest bands of all time and inarguably the greatest band ever to be named after a needlessly complicated fictional sexual pleasure machine, will perform a four-night stand at Gibson Amphitheatre.
What makes this series of concerts special are the set lists they will be using on what they call the "Steely Dan Rent Party" tour…
8/21: in addition to other songs, complete performance of Aja ("Deacon Blues," "Peg," "Josie")
8/22: complete performance of Gaucho ("Hey Nineteen," "Babylon Sisters")
8/24: complete performance of The Royal Scam ("Kid Charlemagne," "Haitian Divorce," "The Fez")
8/25: all songs chosen by fans from the Steely Dan website
Adam and I saw them last August 4 at the Honda Center, where Donald Fagen, Walter Becker, and their sidemen performed a breakneck two-hour show (which ended with "My Old School," my favorite Dan track of all time) with a dynamic energy I never heard on their studio records. I have rarely had a more delightful time at a show.
Tickets go on sale tomorrow, and if you take my advice, score some seats, throw a Steely Dan t-shirt on your heavenly body, and don't give a f**k about anything else but the music!
(Andrew Rostan is NOT being paid by Steely Dan, though that would make this even cooler.)
