Reading a Book So You Don't Have To: Richard Cook and Brian Morton's Shopping

For starters, I own over 30 CDs by Miles Dewey Davis III....but only one of these three listed?!

The Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD is the definitive book for any jazz fan. It is not comprehensive, for it does not cover recordings currently unavailable to the general public, but it provides a vast commentary on the history of jazz and the greatest examples of the music, and its British authors, Richard Cook and Brian Morton, are "cats" of the most purring order, combining genuine reverence with a recognition that jazz is, above all, music of fun and discovery.

Cook and Morton select about 200 CDs as the "core collection," recordings any jazz fan, really, any music lover, should attempt to acquire. For those of you who don't have time to peruse the 1,400 pages of the Guide, I have taken the liberty of putting Cook and Morton's Core Collection online. Hope that somebody out there might be turned on to this extraordinary music the way this man was at 13 when he heard Bitches Brew for the first time.

(This may be out of the blue, but Chicago put me in the mood.)
